The Speech Therapy Unit — helping children find their voice

20 June 2024

The speech therapy unit at our Assessment & Therapeutic Centre (ATC) in Bhubaneswar is run by a qualified speech and language therapist. It offers speech and voice therapy treatments and exercises for children working to overcome speech, language and communication difficulties. The ATC, which opened on 31 January 2021, brings this support together with the wider therapy services IFHD has developed since 1995.

Every child moves at their own pace, so the therapist tailors sessions to the difficulty each child is facing. The aim is practical: to help a child form sounds, build language and communicate more clearly, session by session.

Progress does not stop when a session ends. The therapist also coaches parents on how to stimulate speech and communication at home, so the work continues between visits and becomes part of everyday family life.

Speech therapy is not treated as an add-on. It is written into each child's individual education plan, so communication goals sit alongside the rest of their learning and the whole plan pulls in the same direction.
